Its Spring!

I know I am noticing a bit late that spring is here. But at least I am glad I noticed. On my walk between home and office, I see beautiful purple flowers in full bloom, leaves turning red on the trees. Everything looks so beautiful! I am making an attempt at being a more positive person and so it is nice when you encounter something beautiful in the daily grind and more importantly, you notice and appreciate it, without being lost in the humdrum of daily routine. I will try to keep my eyes open to notice more of such beauty even if it might be rare in the concrete jungle.

Day trip to Nehru planetarium and science centre in Worli

Last Saturday, we planned a trip to the Nehru planetarium and science center in Worli and Lower Parel. It was the last weekend of the Christmas vacation. I had pre-booked a planetarium show at 12 in the afternoon. It is also recommended on their website to pre-book at least a day in advance. If you want an English show specifically, it is better to book 2 days in advance, especially during holidays and vacations. We went with the Hindi show since the English one was almost fully booked when I checked. It is very easy to book on their website and the ticket can be shown on the phone. Anyway, we left home after breakfast around 9:10 am. We got a bus to reach Thane station before 9:30 am. We reached Thane station a little after 10 am and booked tickets for CST local. Many local trains have Thane and CST as start and end stations so it is easier to get in and out. Since it was a weekend, the rush was a little less. I have a special place in my heart for gujarati food. Having tasted authentic home-cooked gujarati food, I have very high standards when it comes to eating gujarati food. In my experience, it is very difficult to get the gujju taste outside of Gujarat. Although here in the US, gujarati food in Atlanta does come close to meeting my standards. I haven't tasted the food since a couple of years so I hope this still holds true. Today's lunch thali of chana bataka nu shaak (black chickpeas and potato curry) and kadhi with rotis and rice is a special combo where everything goes so well together. These recipes make me feel I am back in Gujarat eating a homely meal. Chana Bataka nu Shaak Black Chickpeas and potatoes are cooked in a sweet spicy gravy thickened with besan. Recreating Turtle Empanadas : Empanadas filled with chocolate, caramel and walnuts

I have been wanting to recreate Turtle empanadas ever since I tasted them at a popular Mexican eatery called "On the Border", back in Charlotte. That was over 3 years ago. They had, apparently, discontinued the dessert when we went there again. That made us pretty sad. It was just last month, for our 10th wedding anniversary, that I finally made up my mind to try it out. It was pretty close tastewise, as far as our memory serves. Mine were just somewhat smaller than the ones at On the Border. Empanadas plated up to look pretty! I made all the components before hand, then assembled and baked the empanadas the day of our anniversary. Instead of regular caramel, I made dulche de leche one day. I really wanted to try making it for its unique preparation method. I made chocolate sauce the next day and the dough on the third day. Finally every thing came together to make a beautiful dessert.
